What is Limonene?

Limonene is one of the most common terpenes found in cannabis plants, second only to myrcene. Remember that terpenes are the chemicals found in a multitude of plants. They are responsible for giving them their organoleptic qualities (their aroma and flavor).

Where can we find Limonene

In particular, limonene is found in numerous citrus fruits, such as orange, lemon, or lime. Moreover, it can also be found in mint and rosemary, among others. Additionally, as we have mentioned, it is quite common in marijuana plants.

This specific terpene can be used in various fields, as it has multiple functions and effects. Thus, it will be very common to find it in cosmetic products, pharmaceutical products, aromatherapy, the food industry, or cleaning products.

Limonene structure

Limonene is a monoterpene. If you have read our post about terpenes, you will know that monoterpenes are the union of two units of isoprenes. Thus, monoterpenes are composed of 10 hydrocarbon atoms.

Further, it takes the form of a colorless and volatile liquid that settles, in the case of fruits, on their peel. Meanwhile, in cannabis plants, they are found in glandular trichomes. Thanks to this liquid, our plants are protected from pests and certain parasites. Besides, these insects perceive the particular aroma of limonene as toxic, which works as an excellent repellent.

Limonene flavor and aroma

The organoleptic qualities of limonene are quite peculiar, as they give that combined aroma of sweet, bitter, and acidic. In other words, it provides the citrusy flavor that we get when consuming, for example, an orange, or when tasting a variety of marijuana where this type of terpene predominates.

However, even if a variety of cannabis plant contains a high content of limonene, this does not mean that they will all taste or smell the same. On the contrary, it is precisely its good confluence with other terpenes, which makes each variety have an exceptional and unique flavor and aroma.

Limonene effects and benefits

Limonene is a terpene widely used in aromatherapy, precisely because its consumption (in any form) generates certain effects on our bodies. The effect by which limonene is distinguished is its ability to lift mood, it is energizing. Thus, it is used in aromatherapy through the use of diffusers for this same purpose.

Just like with flavor and aroma, terpenes also work very well in synergy with the cannabinoids of the marijuana plant in the so-called entourage effect. In this way, although limonene has a particular and isolated effect, in conjunction with the cannabinoids of the plant, it can generate different effects. That is, even though the isolated effects of limonene are more similar to what a sativa variety may offer, not all varieties with good limonene production will offer this effect. It is important to understand that the percentage of terpenes, in this case limonene, that we can find in a plant is less than 2%. Meanwhile, that of cannabinoids, such as THC, can reach up to 30%. The confluence between cannabinoids and terpenes will provide us with a unique and unparalleled experience compared to other varieties.

So far the effects, but limonene has multiple isolated benefits through its consumption. As we have already mentioned above, it can be used in many fields:

  • It is used in food products as an additive to enhance their flavor.
  • In some cosmetic products, such as creams or balms, it is used to give them citrus aromas.
  • It functions as a natural insecticide, so it is incorporated into aerosols. Furthermore, being biodegradable, it is a more ecological alternative compared to other aerosols made with chemical substances.
  • In cleaning products, limonene is introduced because it is an excellent grease solvent.
  • It is a perfect antifungal, as it slows down or even prevents the proliferation and growth of some types of fungi.

What are the medicinal properties of limonene?

In addition to the numerous benefits we have seen, limonene is a terpene that provides incredible medicinal properties.

We have already mentioned before that one of its primordial effects, which is why it is mainly used in aromatherapy, is its potent energizing effect. Its consumption is considered antidepressant and anxiolytic. However, caution must be exercised with this recommendation since, if the intention is to achieve this effect from limonene extracted from marijuana, it must be considered that there may be plants that have high doses of other terpenes or other elements that may generate a contrary effect.

In addition, this terpene also works as a treatment against gastric reflux, as an anti-inflammatory, as an antioxidant, or as a stimulant of the immune system. On the other hand, it is also used in numerous weight loss diets, as it is a good complement to use against obesity.

There are scientific studies and researches that are beginning to discover the anticancer properties of limonene. In a trial conducted with patients with breast cancer, the consumption of this terpene caused a reduction in the tumor in several affected individuals. Other studies have concluded that it may minimize or even destroy cancer cells in cases of lung and brain cancer.

It is important to highlight that the misuse of this terpene, as well as an overdose of it, can lead to certain degrees of toxicity in the human body and allergic reactions. For example, skin rashes, discomfort, and sensitization in delicate skins are common. Therefore, its use is not recommended in children or its insertion in products that will be intended for application on the eyes or lips.

Cannabis strains rich in Limonene

It is true that a large amount of the terpenes in cannabis plants are lost in the curing process or in combustion. However, there are increasingly advances in extraction methods that allow greater retention of terpenes, so that we can enjoy their multiple effects, flavors, and aromas.
