Alternatives to rolling papers

Few things are more frustrating than wanting to enjoy a good joint and realizing you’re out of rolling papers—and the smoke shop is already closed. It’s a common situation that can ruin your plans. So, what can you do? Are there alternatives to rolling papers?

Ideally, you should always have some spare rolling papers or, failing that, a device like a pipe, bong, or vaporizer. But if that’s not the case either, several homemade solutions can get you out of trouble.

Alternatives to rolling papers

The first option is to try rolling the joint using a substitute material for conventional rolling paper. The result won’t be the same, but it can be an interesting experience.

Corn husks

Corn husks can serve as a natural alternative to traditional rolling papers. They are fibrous, smooth, and flexible, and in fact, they’re often used for smoking cannabis in countries where corn is grown, like Mexico, Jamaica, or the United States. Ideally, they should be sun-dried first to improve their texture, but in a pinch, they can be used as-is.

Book or newspaper pages

In a bind, you might try rolling a joint with a page from a book or similar material, but you should avoid any parts with ink to avoid inhaling the chemicals used in printing. Another issue is that this type of paper may burn faster than the herb.

Tissue paper

Tissue paper, often used for wrapping objects and gifts, can serve as a last resort when you’re out of rolling papers. It’s important not to use colored or scented varieties, as they contain chemicals that could be toxic if smoked. Tissue paper is very flexible, so rolling might be tricky. A rolling machine is your best bet here.

Food wrappers

Some foods come wrapped in types of paper that can be used as rolling paper alternatives, such as rice paper or edible seaweed wraps. Check your pantry for wrappers that might work in a pinch.

Parchment paper

Parchment paper, typically used for baking, can also serve as a substitute. Just be sure it doesn’t have any chemical coatings, additives, or bleaching agents.

Using a cigarette

A common alternative when rolling papers run out is to grab a regular cigarette, empty it, and refill it with cannabis. This requires patience and skill, as you’ll need to carefully remove the tobacco without tearing the paper. Then, refill it slowly with cannabis and finally remove the filter by twisting it gently.

Homemade pipe with a soda can

If you have an empty soda or beer can, you can repurpose it into a handy homemade pipe. The process is simple and effective.

  • First, wash the can thoroughly to remove any residue, as leftover soda could affect the taste.
  • Make a dent in the middle of the can to form a bowl. Poke a few holes into the dent using a pin so smoke can pass through as you inhale.
  • Then, make a hole on the side of the can near where you’ll grip it. This will act as your carb hole, which you’ll cover with your thumb while smoking.
  • Remove the tab from the can’s mouth and heat the bowl and carb area with a lighter to vaporize any remaining chemicals for a safer experience.
  • Finally, place your cannabis in the dent, light it, and start smoking.

Bottle Pipe

Another popular and easy option is to make a homemade pipe from a small plastic water bottle.

  • Remove the bottle cap and cover the opening with a piece of aluminum foil. Fold it over the edge and shape it into a small bowl. Poke a few holes in it to allow smoke to pass.
  • Next, make a hole on the side of the bottle, about where the label ends. Use a screwdriver to keep the hole a moderate size. This will be your mouthpiece. You can also use a hollowed-out pen or straw.
  • Place the herb in the foil bowl and inhale through the mouthpiece. Optionally, fill the bottle with a bit of water for a smoother experience.

Apple Pipe

Who doesn’t have an apple at home? It turns out you can even use one to smoke your herb when you’re out of rolling papers. It’s easy to make and even adds a sweet flavor to your cannabis.

  • Remove the apple’s stem. Use a pen or pencil to make a small hole in the top where the stem was. This will be your bowl.
  • Then make a hole on the side that connects to the top hole. This will be the mouthpiece. Blow through it to ensure the two holes connect.
  • On the opposite side, make a third, smaller hole. This will be the carb hole. Cover it with your finger while inhaling to control airflow.
  • Load it up. Place ground cannabis in the top hole.
  • Cover the carb, light the bowl, and inhale through the mouthpiece. Release the carb to finish the hit.

As you can see, there are plenty of creative alternatives to rolling papers, and each can offer a unique smoking experience.
