All about black weed

Cannabis plants may have different colors and tonalities like red, purple, or blue weed strains. One of the least known types is the black weed, which stands out for its leaves’ tonalities, giving them a unique and different appearance compared to the rest of the genes. It’s a very rare and special strain with dark and unusual colors to see in nature. To understand better how this process occurs, we’ve gathered all the information about it.

How does weed get its colors?

Cannabis can get different tonalities depending on some growing factors. Anthocyanins (a kind of flavonoid) are responsible for providing plants with these unique colors, as they are caused by their antioxidant effects.

At this moment, more than 500 anthocyanins have been identified, which are responsible for those red, purple, or blue colors. As the plant matures, the production of flavonoids increases. This explains why young specimens are usually greener, while mature specimens get darker.

These tonalities also depend on some factors such as pH or temperature. In this way, cannabis plants that are grown in a warm and Mediterranean weather tend to have a brighter-clearer green color. On the other hand, those that grow in cooler weather, get a blue color with purple tones, that is to say, dark tonalities.

What is black weed?

What is black weed?

Black marijuana stands out for having darker and nearly black tones. This tonality appears when there’s a high anthocyanin presence, associated with environmental changes.

Its main role is to prevent the plant from getting cold, so when temperatures drop, it will protect the water in the cannabis plant from freezing. The cooler the weather is, the darker the colors are.

Another cause that may affect the color of these plants is the pH of the soil. In general, cannabis prefers a slightly acidic substrate. If the soil has been acidified, anthocyanins will bring about a bright red color. Furthermore, if it has a neutral pH, the tonality will become darker. In order to get good results, the pH should be in a range between 5.8 and 6.8.

Is black weed stronger?

Nowadays, we can find black weed on the Black strains market descended from genes with a recessive phenotype, which turns glucose into the anthocyanins that will inherit the recessive gene from the mother plant.

When growers come across this sort of weed plants, they usually have doubts about organoleptic properties or their effects. However, we must take into account that this black color only affects how the marijuana plant looks, so THC levels or aromas will rely on each strain trait.
