What to do with weed resin?

When talking about consuming cannabis, weed or marijuana, people normally think about the buds or flowers, that is to say, herb materials. Hush is another substance that can be extracted from cannabis plants, specifically from removing trichomes. There are so many ways to extract this material and to consume it, that’s why in this article we are going to learn what to do with weed resin, their different types and side effects.

What is weed resin?

When growing cannabis, we normally expect to have a great yield of flowers. These buds are usually covered by a thick layer of a light to dark brown and sticky substance which is called resin. This sticky or powdery substance is produced by trichomes, a tiny compound that covers the flowers of cannabis female plants.

In order to better comprehend why cannabis resin produces psychoactive and medical effects, it is important to know why resin is produced and what is its main purpose.

How is weed resin produced?

As many other plants, cannabis produces resin to protect itself from harmful agents such as insects, infections, fungi or even UV rays. It acts indeed as an external immune system. However, the different terpenes present on resin (which are responsible for most of the flavors and aromas) can also attract beneficial insects and pollinators. This way, the plant can also communicate and engage with the outside world.

In regards to the production of this substance, it is used to make products or extracts like live resin concentrates, rosin or Co2 oil among others due to its high THC concentration and the medical-therapeutic benefits that it provides.

Different types of cannabis resin

Live resin

This concentrate is made from freshly harvested cannabis with a flash-frozen technique to preserve the terpenes and prevent oxidation and heat from deteriorating these substances. One of the main advantages of this concentrate is that it contains large amounts of THC, which is perfect to take advantage of its therapeutic properties.

Hash

A hash is a concentrate such as CBD Hash, that can be collected by removing and processing trichomes into a concentrated brick form. This extract has higher THC levels than flowers, and there are different types of hash depending on the extraction method.

Butane hash oil

BHO extracts consist of obtaining cannabis oil with high terpene content by using butane gas. It can be performed with dry or frozen weed, and the final product is called Shatter, which can be consumed by inhalation, vaporization or in capsules.

Rosin

Rosin is obtained by using low pressure and heat and doesn’t require any type of solvent. These dried and cured flowers (or buds) are pressed by using rosin press machines. With this method, you can get more flavor and intense, powerful effects.

CO2 oil

CO2 oil is a cannabis concentrate obtained by resin which has been extracted with solvents involving heating and pressurizing. This substance is commonly used in vape pens and its texture is similar to sugar glass, although it can have other forms.

What to do with weed resin?

There are different ways in which you can use or consume your resin to experience the different therapeutic and medicinal properties of THC and CBD in some different ways. One of the most common ways, apart from vaping, is combining your resin with any leftover weed or Kief from a grinder or storage jar. Then, you just have to roll a joint sticking the resin to the paper and light it up.

Another peculiar way is to eat it. You can directly put it into your mouth while eating sweets or chocolate to mask the flavor, or even preparing a whole recipe adding your favorite weed resin concentrate.

However, weed resin dries out if it’s exposed to the air for a long time. In order to prevent our resin from going to waste, we must store it properly using an airtight container in a cool, dark place. We must use a different container depending on the resin form and its stickiness. Thus, we can choose among glass jars, plastic jars, silicone jars or even parchment paper.

Weed resin side effects

When consuming resin, people may experience some side effects that are important to know since high THC contents can be harmful to our brain and system. Some of the most common side effects are:

  • Anxiety
  • Paranoia
  • Hallucinations
  • Problems with memory and attention
  • Respiratory infections
  • Tachycardia
  • High blood pressure

Also, consuming resin is not recommended for people with a high THC dependence as this can also aggravate depression, anxiety and cause physical pain such as stomach ache.

Cannabis extracts guarantee high cannabinoid and terpene content while promoting other consumption methods, both recreational and medicinal. We hope this post has been useful to learn what to do with weed resin and how this wonderful substance is produced.
