Spice and K2: the dangers of synthetic cannabinoids

Have you ever heard of synthetic cannabinoids? Nowadays, the world of drugs is vast and diverse. Periodically, new substances emerge on the market to attract curious consumers. The problem is that many of these substances are extremely dangerous, as is the case with “Spice.” Below, we explain its characteristics, effects, and the risks it entails.

What is the drug ‘Spice’?

Spice resembles cannabis but is produced synthetically. Its formula consists of a herbal blend (for example, derived from industrial hemp seeds), sprayed with chemical compounds that mimic THC, the active ingredient in cannabis. As a result, Spice is usually sold as pre-packaged shredded herbs or pre-rolled joints, rather than whole buds, like those found in CBD flowers.

Spice is named for the strong odor it emits, although it is also known by other names such as K2, Hardcore, Buddha Blue, or simply synthetic cannabis.

Composition of synthetic cannabinoids

The exact chemical composition of this substance is unknown because each batch may contain different ingredients depending on availability and its commercial form. This is precisely what makes synthetic drugs so dangerous. In addition to using questionable chemicals, the effects—both short-term and long-term—are unpredictable.

Synthetic cannabinoids act on the brain’s cannabinoid receptors, similar to a regular joint. However, the risk of experiencing a white-out or bad trip is significantly higher. Some sources claim that the effect of synthetic cannabis can be up to four times stronger than that of natural cannabis.

What effects does it cause?

The effects are very intense and, in some cases, so severe that several young people have had to be hospitalized due to severe paranoia. Here are the main effects of this substance:

  • Delirium and confusion. Users of synthetic cannabinoids may experience intense states of confusion and delirium, losing touch with reality and becoming unable to think clearly and rationally.
  • Hallucinations. Highly vivid and realistic hallucinations have also been reported after consuming this substance.
  • Psychosis and paranoia. After consuming synthetic cannabinoids, there is a risk of intense paranoia, which can lead to psychotic symptoms and extreme anxiety. This mental state can result in behaviors and decisions that endanger the user’s health and well-being.
  • Dependency. Spice is highly addictive and causes withdrawal symptoms in a short period. These symptoms often include headaches, irritability, anxiety, and depression.
  • Physical symptoms. Synthetic cannabinoids can also cause nausea, dizziness, seizures, panic attacks, and an increased heart rate. Cases of severe heart damage have been reported following its use. These drugs are responsible for numerous poisonings and deaths worldwide.

How is it sold?

Spice, like other synthetic cannabinoids, is usually sold online. It can be found in packets of herbs to smoke, vaporize, or even as e-liquids for electronic cigarettes. Some blends are specifically designed for vaping devices, making them easily accessible.

As mentioned earlier, there is no toxicological information about the composition of this drug. In other words, it is unclear which substances it contains, making it impossible to scientifically assess the risks associated with its consumption. This lack of information, combined with the difficulty of controlling its distribution and use, presents significant challenges. Synthetic cannabinoids are typically undetectable in routine drug tests.

Spice first gained popularity in prisons due to its undetectability in urine tests. This characteristic fuels the mystery surrounding its chemical composition, which constantly changes, making it difficult to identify markers for detection in the body.

An additional problem is that synthetic cannabinoids, in small amounts, often produce an effect similar to THC, making it easy to deceive distributors and consumers into believing they are purchasing natural cannabis when, in fact, it is synthetic.

Overcoming addiction to synthetic drugs

Spice is highly addictive. While it is not entirely new—it has been circulating on the illegal market for a few years—cases of dependency are on the rise. Little is currently known about the long-term effects and consequences of its consumption. For this reason, there are no specific approaches to treat this issue yet. However, strategies and guidelines exist to help those trapped in addiction.

Seek professional support

The first step is to seek help from an addiction specialist or visit a rehabilitation center with support programs. These substances affect both the body and mind, requiring comprehensive medical treatment.

Change your environment

If you are in an environment where drug use is common, it will be difficult—if not impossible—to overcome your addiction. The best course of action is to change your surroundings and surround yourself with healthy individuals who can support you in staying clean.

Learn to manage stress

In many cases, people turn to drugs as a way to escape difficult life situations. Learning to manage emotions is a crucial step in avoiding feeling overwhelmed and turning to drugs for relief.

Take care of your body

Self-care is essential in overcoming addiction. This involves following a balanced diet, getting adequate rest, and engaging in regular physical activity. If your body is stronger, your mind will be stronger too, reducing the likelihood of relapse.

Be patient and celebrate every success

Overcoming addiction is a challenging process, which is why it’s important to celebrate each day without relapse as a victory. Some days will be harder than others, and it’s crucial to understand that relapses are common and part of the recovery process. However, losing a battle does not mean losing the war.

Spice is just one of the many synthetic cannabinoids available on the market. Its exact composition is unknown, making its effects highly unpredictable and dangerous.
