How to reduce red eyes after smoking

Red eyes from smoking are the main giveaway that someone has been consuming marijuana. Most users are aware of this and know that showing up at work or a family gathering can lead to problems and may even be risky in places where cannabis is frowned upon. That’s why in this article we’ll learn some tricks to reduce red eyes after smoking.

How long it takes o reduce red eyes after smoking

Typically, red eyes go away after about two hours, which is when THC is at its peak activity, though this depends largely on the strain’s potency and the smoker’s metabolism. In some people, this effect can last up to four hours. So, if you don’t want to go out into the world with bloodshot eyes, the best approach is to plan your smoking session with enough time to recover. However, this isn’t always possible since life is full of responsibilities and commitments. So, is there anything we can do to reduce red eyes from smoking?

Why it happens

Before exploring possible solutions, let’s look at why this eye redness occurs. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) lowers blood pressure, which causes blood vessels and capillaries to dilate. When the eye’s capillaries expand, blood flow to the area increases, and intraocular pressure decreases. This is why cannabis is often recommended as a treatment for glaucoma patients. In other words, red eyes are not caused by irritation from smoke but rather by THC’s effects on the body. Because of this, redness can also appear after consuming cannabis through edibles, vaping, or even transdermal patches.

How to get rid of red eyes from smoking

Since THC affects the body when consuming cannabis, it cannot be avoided entirely, but we can try to counteract these unwanted effects that give us away. Here are some very useful tricks.

Stay hydrated

Dehydration makes the eyes even redder because the tissues become drier and irritate more easily. Marijuana does not actively dehydrate (as alcohol does, for example), but the body uses available water to eliminate THC from the bloodstream. So, when consuming weed, it is highly recommended to stay well hydrated. This will help prevent red eyes and dry mouth.

Eye drops

There are plenty of eye drops available on the market that provide a quick solution to red eyes after smoking. These drops lubricate the eyes and can be applied while smoking to prevent dryness, and after smoking to relieve irritation. Here are some different types and active compounds that work:

  • Tetrahydrozoline. A common ingredient in many eye drops. It reduces blood vessel inflammation and can significantly decrease redness. However, once the effect wears off, red eyes may return.
  • Brimonidine. This active ingredient also reduces blood vessel inflammation, with a lower risk of rebound redness.
  • Artificial tears. Ideal if your eyes are very dry. They can be used if smoking in a closed space. They provide immediate relief and prevent redness from irritation.
  • Lubricating drops. These also help protect the eye from dryness while smoking.

Caffeine

Caffeine has a vasoconstrictive effect on the body and can help reduce blood flow in the eyes, thereby decreasing redness. You can drink coffee, cola, tea, or an energy drink.

Use strains with lower THC content

Another way to prevent, at least partially, red eyes is to consume strains with lower THC content or even mix your weed with CBD buds to balance the effects. This can be an option if you want to smoke but don’t have enough time to wait for the redness to subside.

Wear sunglasses

As a last resort, if red eyes are a real issue and it’s too obvious that you’ve been smoking, sunglasses can be the best ally to hide your look for a couple of hours.

Red eyes from smoking do not pose any health risk as they are simply a reversible side effect of marijuana. The real issue is social stigma. So, if you have an appointment in a few hours, make sure to stay hydrated and avoid staying in a closed space while smoking. Also, keep some good eye drops and a pair of sunglasses handy for emergencies.
