How to grow CBD

Cannabidiol, commonly known as CBD is a compound found in Cannabis Sativa plants very used for its therapeutic properties, although it can be used in a recreational way as well. Since this substance doesn’t contain any psychoactive effects, it’s completely legal to use in most parts of the world. However, if you want to learn how to grow CBD to make extractions yourself, you need to be really careful when choosing your strain, as some cannabis plants may also contain high THC levels.

What are the benefits of CBD?

Medicinal marijuana
  • Good for treating contractures as it’s a pain relief.
  • Good for insomnia problems since it is a sleep inducer.
  • Useful for treating diseases such as anorexia, bulimia or similar illnesses as it stimulates appetite.
  • Useful for treating fibromyalgia and multiple sclerosis, reducing pain and nausea.
  • Improves blood flow, reducing artery pressure and artery obstruction.
  • Increases brain cell lifespan, avoiding illnesses caused by degeneration like Alzheimer’s disease.
  • Reduces anxiety, depression and psychosis, making it useful for schizophrenia.
  • Helps to prevent and fight cancer, containing anti-tumor and anti-metastatic properties.

Which plants contain CBD?

Cannabinoids are exclusively found in Cannabis sativa plants (including marijuana and hemp), however, there are some other plants that contain cannabinoid-like compounds, also known as cannabimimetic compounds, that also interact with the endocannabinoid system. Some of these plants are cacao, paracress, liverworts, echinacea, black pepper, black truffles or even tea shrubs among others.

Hemp vs. Marijuana

Hemp and marijuana are both plants that come from the same species: Cannabis Sativa. The main difference between them is their THC levels. Hemp-derived products have a THC content lower than 0.3%, which means that it doesn’t create the “high”, while marijuana does have much higher THC levels and produce those psychoactive effects.

Male and female hemp plants

The female hemp plants are the ones that produce greater amounts of THC, CBD and other derived compounds, which means that they are the best for growing. However, you need both plants to produce seeds. If you want to grow CBD plants without the risk of growing a male and ruining your crop, then you should try feminized seeds.

Is it legal to grow CBD plants?

During the 2018 Farm Bill celebrated in Texas, hemp was reclassified, so now is legal to grow industrial hemp as it contains less than a 0.3% THC. At the time of writing this article (May, 2023), to grow cannabis plants at home, you must be 21 years old in any state of the US, but the number of plants is limited depending on the state you are in. For example, in California you can grow up to 6 cannabis plants for both recreational and medical use, however, some states allow people to grow up to 25 plants for personal use like in Alaska.

In around 35 out of 50 states, recreational cannabis is allowed. Some of these states are: Washington, California, Michigan, Massachusetts, Alaska, Colorado, Nevada, New York, Arizona and New Jersey among others. For more information, please consult the current legal situation of your state to know if it is allowed to grow cannabis and how many plants you can yield.

Growing CBD plants

In order to grow hemp plants, you must first decide whether to grow indoors or outdoors. However, growing indoors may be more expensive than growing outdoors as you need more accessories to recreate the optimal conditions for your crop, as well as having to expend some money when it comes to paying the light bill.

On the other hand, it’s true that growing outdoors is much more convenient if you have the proper space to do it, but it also may be risky as you may be facing other problems such as insects or fungi infestations among others.

In regards to the growing, hemp plants have four stages: germination, seedling, vegetative and flowering. During all these stages, it is very important to provide all the necessary nutrients, fertilizers and basic care such as controlling moisture and temperature in order to get a high quality yield.
