Expanded clay for plants, also known as perlite, is used in many different types of cultivation, but in cannabis it has endless uses:
Placing the clay balls at the bottom of our pots so that the plants always have good drainage, so that the soil does not become waterlogged outdoors if it rains a lot or if we simply overwater just once.
We can place a couple of fingers of clay at the base of the cutting propagator, as if it were a barrier so that our cuttings do not become waterlogged with the water at the bottom of the tray and the humidity is always high due to the evaporation of the water at the bottom.
In hydroponics, filling the pots to the top and planting the seeds or cuttings in rockwool cubes. This inert medium can be reused as many times as you want, cleaning the root residues of the plants you have harvested. If you start a cultivation with new expanded clay, it is essential to stabilize the pH to 5.5 before placing the plants, the preparation of the expanded perlite is a bit laborious but once finished the balls maintain their stable pH over time.
Rinse the expanded clay balls as much as possible with clean tap water, using a large strainer until you see the water falling clean without the typical brown color (if you don t do this your tank will turn into a swamp, clogging even the pump and drippers).
Now prepare a tray, filling it with Osmosis or distilled water adjusted to pH 5.5 (we need EC 0.0 because clay is like a sponge that retains salts and does not release them until it is saturated), we pour all the previously rinsed clay and let it soak for about 48 hours.
It will be necessary to lower the pH a few more times until it stays at 5.5 since the expanded clay balls will fight against you to return to the original pH 7. Once the battle with the pH has been won, we have them ready to work without troublesome fluctuations in pH and EC.
