How to make your own homemade flowering fertilizer

Are you ready to make homemade flowering fertilizer for your cannabis plants? Here are some easy DIY recipes to feed your plants and help them grow healthy and lush without relying on commercial chemical.

What is a fertilizer, and why should you use it?

Fertilizers are substances packed with nutrients that enrich the soil and improve its properties to help plants thrive. They get that name because they make the soil more fertile. In fact, fertilizers can be of animal, plant, mineral, or synthetic origin, offering various options depending on the needs of your plants. For example, there are biofertilizers with live microorganisms, organic fertilizers (also known as compost), and inorganic fertilizers such as powdered minerals.

In addition to light and water, plants need  three key macronutrients to grow: nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. However, their needs depend on the type of plant, stage of growth, size, and growing environment. Cannabis plants, in particular, also rely on essential nutrients like magnesium, calcium, and sulfur, along with small amounts of micronutrients like iron, zinc, boron, chlorine, manganese, molybdenum, and copper.

Benefits of using homemade fertilizer for flowering

As mentioned above, there are many fertilizer options on the market that are easy to find and use. These products often come with different ingredients, nutrient ratios, or specific supplements designed to stimulate particular stages of plant growth.

The problem,  however, is that excess nutrients can be even more damaging to a crop than a deficiency. It’s surprisingly easy to overdo it with commercial fertilizers because they tend to be highly concentrated. This can stress cannabis plants, stunt growth, or lead to nutrient burn in various parts of the plant. Indeed, overfertilization is one of the most common mistakes beginner growers make.

Additionally, some synthetic fertilizers can upset the pH balance of the soil, leading to a degradation of soil quality over time. On top of that, these fertilizers ar often priced high, pushing growing cost beyond your budget.

The solution? Make your own homemade flowering fertilizer! It’s simple, cost-effective, and uses common ingredients that are easy to find.

Benefits of homemade fertilizer

How to make homemade cannabis flowering fertilizer

Bat guano tea

Bat guano, derived from bat droppings, is rich in phosphorus, potassium, and nitrogen ,perfect for stimulating natural flowering .

  • Mix 1 tablespoon of bat guano into 2 liters of water.
  • Let it sit for 5 days.
  • Use it to water plants every 15 days to avoid over-fertilization.

Black sesame tea

Black sesame is high in calcium and iron and can be found in health food stores.

  • Combine 4 tablespoons of black sesame with 1.5 liters of water.
  • Let it sit for 24 hours, then strain it.
  • Mix with an additional 1.5 liters of water.
  • Store in the refrigerator and use within 7 days.

Seaweed flour tea

Seaweed flour used for growing is usually made from seaweed and provides many  minerals and chlorophyll. Besides, it is also an affordable product.

  • Mix 50 grams of seaweed flour with 1 liter of water in a sterilized glass container.
  • Let  sit for 10 days.
  • Use on alternate watering days for best results.

Coffee grounds fertilizer

It is very common to use coffee grounds as homemade fertilizer for plants, and we can also do it in cannabis cultivation because it’s a product rich in nitrogen that provides acidity to the soil, which favors the development of certain beneficial bacteria.

To use the coffee grounds, we can also make an infusion by mixing a part of the coffee grounds from the coffee maker in a liter of water. Let it sit for  24 hours and then strain it to use only the water.

Another option is to mix the coffee grounds with other homemade fertilizers, although we must be careful not to exceed 20% so that there is no imbalance of nutrients.

Banana Tea

Another very effective, cheap, and easy-to-prepare homemade fertilizer for flowering is banana tea, which, as we all know, is especially rich in potassium. This mineral is key for the development of cannabis in all its phases and is one of the main macronutrients usually included in commercial fertilizers used for cannabis.

  • Boil 3 banana peels in 1 liter of water.
  • Add 2 tablespoons of honey, molasses, or cane sugar .
  • Allow to cool, remove the husks ans mix with 2 liters of water.
  • Use during thelast weeks of flowering to fatten buds.

Homemade compost fertilizer

Food scraps can be transformed into excellent fertilizer for cannabis plants.

  • Mix fruit and vegetable peels, egg shells, used coffee grounds, and tea leaves in a container.
  • Add enough water to cover the mixture and seal the container.
  • Leave it in the sun for a few days, stirring occasionally.
  • Dilute the compost (1 part compost to 10 parts water) before using it.
  • Do not use no more than twice a month to avoid pests.

Diluted urine fertilizer

It may sound unpleasant, but urine is a natural fertilizer (and it is impossible to get any cheaper), and it also works. It contains a lot of nitrogen that can boost the growth of cannabis  plants. To use it, it must be diluted in non-chlorinated water in a proportion of 4-6 ratio, and it is recommended not to use it in the flowering phase because it is a stage in which the plant hardly needs this chemical.

Brewer’s yeast fertilizer

Brewer’s yeast is packed with amino acids, proteins, potassium, and phosphorus.

  • Dissolve 1 teaspoon of brewer’s yeast in 1 liter of water.
  • Use to water your plants throughout their growth cycle.

Final tips for homemade flowering fertilizers

These are just a few recipes for homemade flowering fertilizers, but many more options use common ingredients like wood ash, manure, fruit pulp, aquafaba, or vegetable cooking water. These natural and affordable nutrient sources can be tailored to the specific growth stages and needs of your plants.
