How to germinate weed seeds

People venturing into cannabis self-cultivation need a reliable source of information guiding them through all the steps for a quality harvest. At GB The Green Brand, we aim to accompany you through this delightful process. Therefore, this post details how to germinate marijuana seeds using some of the most successful methods, ensuring a high-quality cultivation experience.

Methods for germinating cannabis seeds

In addition to the methods explained below, it’s interesting to know how to germinate seeds using paper towels. Following any of these methods and instructions will enable simple and effective germination.

Germinating marijuana seeds with cotton

This technique closely resembles the paper towel method.

Required materials:

  • Sanitary cotton (free of chemical residues), with the quantity depending on the seeds to germinate. Cotton discs can be used.
  • Germinator or kitchen tupperware (used to place cotton and seeds).
  • Water spray bottle.
  • Cannabis seeds.
  • A dark place with a proper temperature of around 20-21 degrees Celsius.

Steps to follow:

  • Moisten the cotton uniformly without saturating it.
  • Place the cotton in a container (tupperware) and put the marijuana seeds inside.
  • Cover with another layer of cotton, completely concealing all seeds.
  • Moisturize the upper cotton layer and close the container.
  • Place it in a dark place with the right temperature.

Germinating cannabis seeds in jiffys

Jiffys are compressed peat pellets that expand when moistened, available in various sizes.

For seeds germination it is recommended to start with the smaller ones. Also, they are often used for rooting cuttings.

Required materials:

  • Jiffys matching the number of seeds.
  • Preferred marijuana seeds.
  • Water.
  • Mycorrhizae and trichoderma (optional).
  • A propagator (optional).

Steps to follow::

Prepare the water to be used

Before submerging the jiffy in water for expansion, check the water pH (5.5 to 6) using a pH meter, especially with tap water.

If using bottled water, this step may not be necessary, as bottled water typically has a correct pH level.

Moisten the Jiffys

Take a container and fill it with clean water, ensuring they expand to the ideal size.

Drain excess water, preserving the peat’s density to avoid affecting the roots.

Introduce the seed

The first thing to do is to create a shallow hole measuring 1 or 2 cm. Then, insert the seed with the thicker end upward, lightly covering it by pressing without exerting too much pressure. Wait for a few days.

Germinating cannabis seeds in pots

Before explaining how to germinate marijuana seeds in soil, it’s crucial to note that seed banks do not take responsibility for the results of this method. This means that if your seed doesn’t germinate, you won’t receive a refund or a replacement seed.

However, the necessary materials are simply a pot (0.2 to 0.4 liters in capacity), substrate, and the seed.

Steps to follow:

  1. Fill the pot with soil.
  2. Gently press the substrate with your hand and water it with root stimulant or use growth fertilizer until water drains from the bottom of the pot.
  3. Keep the substrate moist. After germination, create subtle cycles of dryness and moisture without letting it dry completely.
  4. With your thumb or a tool, create a 2cm-deep hole and introduce the seed after a few minutes, allowing the water to descend.

When the seedling starts growing long in search of light, the first pot should be small. After 10 days from the appearance of the aerial part, transplant it to a larger pot, around 3.5 liters. This allows burying the excess stem, reducing space for the first branches, and producing stronger plants.

Seed vs. Clone: which is better?

Many cultivators wonder whether it’s better to start with cannabis seeds or cuttings from plants.

On one hand, for those starting out, it’s advised to begin with seeds. The only drawback of this method is the risk of some seeds not germinating, but it is much simpler.

On the other hand, cultivating from cuttings is more suitable for experienced growers or those with more knowledge. This ensures that all plants are identical since they are branches extracted from a selected plant.

Germination time frame of marijuana seeds

Generally, the primary root emerges with the help of three factors: heat, humidity, and darkness. Under optimal conditions, these seeds will begin to develop within 12 to 36 hours from that moment. The timeframe may vary based on the prevailing conditions.

Other Factors to Consider during Germination

Various factors can affect seed germination, with some of the most notable ones being:

Temperature and humidity for germinating marijuana seeds

To ensure proper germination, seeds must be in an environment with the correct humidity and temperature.

Recommended values include a relative humidity between 70% and 90%. Lower values may also work, but excessive humidity could lead to rot, while too much dryness may cause death.

The ideal temperature should range between 22 and 25°C. If the environment is very cold, a heater can be used.

Best moon phase for germination

Observing the lunar calendar during cultivation reveals that certain moon phases are ideal for germinating seeds. This process should be done when the moon is in the waxing or full phase, as sap circulates upward, aiding in plant development.

What to do after germinating marijuana seeds

Once germinated, continue with the cultivation process. To do this, the first step is to prepare the growing space and choose quality substrate. Afterward, delicately perform the transplant and water. Then, proceed with providing the necessary care during the growth and flowering phases.

When to transplant a germinated marijuana seed?

Transplanting should occur when seedlings show a root of about one centimeter. Approximately a week after sowing the seed, the plant will begin to show the first signs of germination. However, transplantation should not be done until the first pair of true leaves appears.

Now that you’re acquainted with how to germinate marijuana seeds using various methods, feel free to choose the simplest one or the one that best suits your needs.
