Can you bring Space Cake on a plane?

Space cake is a fun way to consume marijuana, and it is even legal in some countries. That’s why many people wonder if they can bring space cake on a plane, as if it were a regular cake, to enjoy later at home or share with a friend. Below, we explain all the legal risks you may face if you try to do something like this.

What Is a Space Cake?

Space cake is a generic name for pastries and baked goods that contain marijuana, hash, or kief as the main ingredient. It is one of the most popular types of cannabis edibles, and there are many different recipes, including brownies, simple cakes, muffins, cookies, tarts, and even chocolates.

Space Cake

They are very common in Coffee Shops in Amsterdam, where marijuana laws are more relaxed than in the rest of Europe, allowing for small-scale sales in specialized shops. That’s why many tourists visiting the country wonder if they can bring space cake on a plane to take home as a unique souvenir.

Cannabis and border control

In Spain, cannabis consumption is only allowed in private spaces. Possession and use in public places result in heavy fines. Carrying cannabis products, including space cake, across international borders can be considered drug trafficking. So the answer is no: you cannot bring a weed brownie from a Coffee Shop in Amsterdam or California.

It’s risky even if you check it in

Attempting to do so involves significant legal risks. Even if the marijuana is concealed in a chocolate pastry, customs and airport security can still detect it, whether it is in your carry-on or checked luggage. Moreover, trained dogs are capable of sniffing out the scent of marijuana, regardless of how well it is packaged or disguised. As a result, carrying cannabis products on a plane can lead to serious consequences, including arrests, hefty fines, and a criminal record. Therefore, it is best to avoid taking the risk altogether.

Expensive fines

Possessing or consuming drugs in a public transportation area (even if it’s inside a brownie) can result in a fine ranging from 601 to 30,000 euros, as it is considered a serious administrative offense. Therefore, if you go through a routine or random check and they discover your space cake, it will first be confiscated, and you will be required to pay a fine. This applies if it’s just a small amount for personal use. However, if you’re carrying weed cakes intended for multiple people, you risk being arrested on suspicion of drug trafficking and taken to the airport police station—an experience you definitely want to avoid.

Can you bring marijuana seeds?

What about seeds? Marijuana seeds are 100% legal and can be freely bought and sold in specialized stores. However, carrying them in your luggage can cause unnecessary trouble, as authorities tend to be very strict about anything related to cannabis.

Bringing CBD Flowers on a plane

The situation is similar with CBD products, also known as light cannabis. In Spain, the cultivation and sale of these products are regulated and completely legal, as long as the THC concentration (the psychoactive cannabinoid) does not exceed 0.2%. CBD has many therapeutic properties and comes in different forms, such as buds, hash, oils, e-liquids, etc. So, one might assume that since CBD is legally sold in the country, bringing it on a plane should not be a problem, right? Unfortunately, that’s not the case.

CBD is legal, but it looks just like weed

It’s important to note that CBD-rich hemp buds look identical to marijuana and even smell the same. So if security finds this product during a check, you will almost certainly have problems—the first being that you will not be allowed to board your flight. In any case, it is recommended to keep the flowers in their original packaging, which identifies them as industrial hemp rather than marijuana. Having the purchase receipt and a certificate from the manufacturer is also advisable.

border control

Even so, there remains a high likelihood that you will be detained for further investigation, and your products will be confiscated and analyzed to confirm their composition. Therefore, even if you are not breaking any laws, the situation can still lead to significant inconvenience, potentially ruining your entire day. Moreover, keep in mind that CBD flowers are still illegal in some countries, such as Slovakia, Thailand, or Japan, making air travel with them strictly prohibited. In fact, penalties can be severe, including prison sentences.

Can you eat a Space Cake before a flight?

If flying makes you anxious and you want to relax, or if you want to have a different experience, you may be tempted to eat a marijuana-infused cake before boarding the plane. No one can stop you, but you should be aware of the risks. If airport officials suspect that someone is under the influence of an intoxicating substance, they typically request a drug test. These tests are also conducted randomly every day at security checkpoints, so the chances of being selected are relatively high. If substances are detected, you won’t be allowed to board the plane, and you’ll miss your flight. So, you have to decide if it’s worth the risk. There are, however, some effective products that help mask drugs in saliva, blood, and urine. In conclusion, you cannot bring space cake on a plane, and it is not advisable to carry any other cannabis-related product either, as it could attract the attention of authorities. You may end up having your item confiscated, facing a tedious search, and answering plenty of questions.
